Some young Alaskans have never had the opportunity to go fishing, and that's what the Jr. Classic is all about. Each August, kids between the ages of eight and 16 are invited to fish with a professional guide on the Kenai River during the Jr. Classic. Participating youth earn their seat on a boat by participating in a day of fun activities that includes boating safety instruction and workshops on salmon, river ecology and stewardship relevant to the Kenai River, courtesy of the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, Kenai Watershed Forum, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Alaska Office of Boating Safety.
More than 40 Alaska and national companies sponsor boats, donate prizes and provide transportation and other in-kind contributions to make the Jr. Classic possible. KRSA works with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Kenai Peninsula, Hospice, Big Brothers / Big Sisters and local military organizations to find youth who will benefit the most from a day on the river.
