Stream Watch Program - Volunteer Opportunity
Stream Watch, a
U.S. Forest Service program, has won national awards and recognition as an
important education program that helps to protect the riparian areas of two
world-class sockeye salmon fisheries on the Kenai Peninsula - the Russian and
Kenai rivers. In an area that receives some 150,000 visits each summer, a cadre
of more than 50 volunteers work on maintaining clean rivers and
contacting anglers to promote responsible sport fishing. KRSA has been a proud
sponsor of Stream Watch since its inception in 1994.
If you want to join
in the stewardship effort that has been essential to maintaining a healthy and
safe fishery, come to the Stream Watch volunteer orientation from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m., on Saturday, June 5 at the Cooper Landing Elementary School auditorium.
Orientation includes lunch, bear safety and first aid training, and specifics
about what volunteers do along the rivers.
Contact Jenny
Rasche, the Stream Watch Coordinator, at (907) 362-1479 for more
information.
Hooked on Fishing - Kid's Rod & Reel Giveaway at the Kenai River
Festival
Join KRSA at the 20th
annual Kenai River Festival on June 12 at Soldotna Creek Park. The celebration
of the river starts Friday evening, June 11 and goes through Sunday evening.
On Saturday, KRSA
will give out more than 100 new and restored fishing rods and reels to kids, ages six to 16, beginning at noon.
If you know of a child in need of a rod and reel so they can start learning the
joys of fishing, bring them on down to join in the fun. Although we will start handing out rods
and reels at noon, the line usually starts forming a couple of hours prior.
Special thanks to the Hooked on Fishing volunteers - Dave Lowery and crew have
been hard at work this spring getting everything prepped for the big day.
If you'd like to donate,
it's not too late. Today is always a great time to treat yourself to new
fishing gear - and recycling your older gear with us! Call Dave at (907) 252-3361
or the KRSA office at 262-8588. We accept gear donations at the office.
Kenai River Classic
More than 100 people
are expected to participate in the 17th annual Kenai River Classic, July 8-10. The Classic is KRSA's flagship annual
charitable fundraising event to raise funds for habitat conservation, angler
access, fisheries management, research and education.
Only a few spots
remain for participants, and the Classic Committee is still soliciting auction
items for the Banquet and Silent Auction, which will be held Friday, July 9 at
Soldotna Sports Center. Several long-time volunteers have retired this year, so
if you're interested in volunteering for the Classic, please let us know at the
office.
Kenai River Jr. Classic
The 4th annual
Kenai River Jr. Classic is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, August 11 at the Harry Gaines Fish Camp along the
Kenai River. More than 120 kids will join us for this fun-filled event that
introduces youth to the joys of fishing.
KRSA partners with
the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Kenai Peninsula and the Armed Services YMCA of
Alaska to bring the opportunity to go silver and pink fishing to kids who
otherwise may never get the chance to go fishing on the Kenai.
Some kids have said
that it ranks as one of their best days in their life! Smiles and kids proudly
holding up their fish for all to see at the end of the day says it all.
Prior to the event,
a fun orientation program is provided that includes river and salmon ecology as
well as boating safety. The Alaska
Department of Fish & Game Mobile Aquatic Classroom will be back on the day
of the event, as will the kids' games, BBQ and a great afternoon of fishing.
If you are
interested in being a boat sponsor or volunteer for this event - please contact
us at the office.
Kenai River Women's Classic
The 3rd annual
Kenai River Women's Classic will take place Sept. 9-11 in Soldotna. Alaska's
top female professionals come together each September to raise money for
habitat restoration and research on the Kenai River, and to help fund a
scholarship for high school girls who are interested in entrepreneurship.
The event includes
two days of silver salmon fishing, networking events, day activities and an
evening professional development panel.
Only a handful of
the 50 slots remain, as many of the previous participants have already elected
to return for this fun-filled, women's networking event.
Proceeds from the Kenai River
Women's Classic are shared between KRSA's habitat restoration fund and the
Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Athena Society's scholarship program. This
program provides scholarships for female high school students to attend Camp
$tartUp, a business camp that teaches business and entrepreneurial skills.
If you are
interested in participating or volunteering, contact us soon at the
office.
